Our top points to consider when buying shoes

Choosing a new pair of work shoes can get abit confusing.

There are so many different styles to choose from.

Our top points to consider when buying shoes ;

-Does this shoe offer enough stability (and in the correct places)?

-Does it have a slight heel?

-Is there enough cushioning? (Especially if you work or train on hard flooring).

-Do I need a rubber outer sole for better grip?

-Is the toe box (front of shoe) be enough to suit my foot type?

-Are laces or straps an option?

Further things to consider when choosing work shoes…

-Avoid shoes that are too narrow for your foot;

From the perspective of a podiatrist, narrow shaped shoes (many styles of work shoe are designed like this to appeal to the eye) are often poorly shaped. They typically do not allow room in the toe box area for most foot types. If you have a narrow foot shape you may be more likely to not have an issue with them.

-Is the flexion point of the shoe suitable?

This is the area where the shoe bends to accomodate the movement of your foot. If it cuts across the forefoot this is not ideal. We want it to be able to accomodate the point where your toes move up and downwards.

-Is there enough space in the toe box?

A shallow depth of the toe box causes compression from the 1st to 5th toe joints. This can make the wearer vulnerable to blisters, cuts and nerve pain.

Consideration  should also be given to how much protection the style of shoe offers you from slips, trips, falls and falling objects. Rubber soled shoes are great for walking on polished hard flooring

If you are unsure about the footwear uniform policy at your workplace and would be interested in an assessment and report of findings, please get in touch.

We also offer a corporate service to clients who wish to have their uniform policy options assessed by a podiatrist.
