R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation), has been the go-to for injury recovery for many years. However current research is suggesting that rest and ice delay the healing process.
So let's look at why…
When we rest, decreased forces are put through injured tissue. This causes an inhibition of key chemical reactions in this tissue that are initiated in response to the loading and unloading of tissue.
Over time, this tissue will experience changes in its strength and also its structure. These changes can precipitate other physical and chemical changes in the tissue
There has been a long-held assumption that ice plays an anti-inflammatory role. This assumption has been disproved which may lead to more of an analgesic role instead.
And whilst you may need some time off for specific activities, it is rare to need to avoid all kinds of movement. Modified movements that promote range of motion and circulation can be very helpful during injury recovery.
These types of modified movements can be discussed during a bio-mechanical assessment. Treatments can be offered that mimic the body’s natural healing processes.
If you have a lower limb injury book an assessment.
