Clients sometimes ask us, "When should I replace my orthotics?"
The answer is always different - depending on the type of orthotic, activity, and amount of use.
As a general rule, they need to be replaced every year. However, the scans of your feet could be rescanned every 3 years.
Here's why…
Constant compression of your orthotics over time reduces their effectiveness. The materials used to manufacture your orthotics also lose their structure over time, impacting your orthotics' effectiveness and lifespan.
Factors to think about when deciding to upgrade the prescription of orthotics would be activity changes, amount increases, and increased time in the orthotics.
Also, training on different surfaces or changes in the intensity of training level may result in a new style of orthotic becoming better suited to your change in activity level.
Over the years you may find that technology and research can change your prescription type, this can make the orthotic more cushioned or lighter, slimmer, and fit more footwear. Best to chat with your podiatrist regarding this.
Scanning protocols become more specific and can capture new data sets which can be incorporated into the design of orthotics.
If you would like to have your current pair of orthotics reassessed (or would like to get your first pair) get in touch.
